The Real Bucket List
Living Your Life and Creating Your Legacy
When we hear the term bucket list, we often consider all the things we’d like to do before we die. Although there are plenty of experiences I’d like to have before I die, that is not what this is about.
The Real Bucket List is intended to provide documentation for anything and everything my family may need if I’m not here, and to provide my family with my final gift – an opportunity to grieve without the hassle of a chaotic estate, while knowing everything I’ve done, I’ve done with them in my heart.
Why I Created The Real Bucket List
My reasons for creating The Real Bucket list stem from the loss of my parents, who died just nine days apart. That experience made me realize having a real bucket list to leave behind was imperative, not only for my family’s well being, but also for my day to day peace of mind.
My dad died of pancreatic cancer. He knew he was dying, and he worked very diligently to ensure everything was in place once he passed. My mama, however, died unexpectedly, and the process of taking care of her affairs was a nightmare.
My husband found my mama’s will, in a box, near a trash can! Fortunately, my brother and I had been named executors, and I was on her checking account because she had been previously ill, and someone had to pay bills. Other than that, I knew nothing about anything. I had asked her previously to share information with me, but I think the prospect of her dying scared her as much as the prospect of losing her scared me.
I found very little information within her home, and literally had to wait on statements, bills, and letters in the mail to begin the process of even understanding what assets and expenses she had. I called people I knew she had worked with, only to be told she had closed accounts or moved them, and often I had to wait to receive information until I had the legal court documents to prove not only that my mama had died, but that I had been given authority to request, receive, and act on her behalf.
It took nearly three years to settle my mama’s estate, and officially close it after her death. And, it meant I wasn’t able to truly grieve during that time because I was so caught up in the busy work of ensuring I did everything I could, while also doing it well.
With three of my own children, I took massive action to ensure if something happened to me, my husband, or – knock on wood – both of us together, everything our family needed to know would be readily accessible.
I created The Real Bucket List because I wanted to know my children would be taken care of in the worst case scenario. I created The Real Bucket List so my family wouldn’t struggle as I did with my mama’s estate.
